Saffron - Love Yourself

A particular ambience of ‘lushness’ has been rearing its subtle head ever so slightly into the scene. With bass heads nodding towards ethereal tape hiss melodies over pomp and bombast, producers (see: Deft, Dauwd, and Troy Gunner) have managed to carve out a niche within a niche (“nicheception”*). While some genre splitting is arguably rigid and frankly unwarranted, the new haze filled dreaminess that surrounds this specific paradigmatic commonality has us reeling with every cloud-sailing synth and tentative triangle tap. Now, taking that all under consideration, LDN based Tim Hutton’s (aka Saffron) foremost effort, “Love Yourself” remains lucid in its malleable production without giving up the proper oomph necessary for an outright vibe provoking hymnal. Yes, Balearic synths twirl along the gentle harmonies splayed transversely across the tepid thermosphere but not in the way that bass music’s culprit of a cousin ‘Chillwave’ would have you assume. No, this is sunny without the palms; this is luminosity minus the sea. What we have here is something quite remarkable, an end of summer jam that emphasizes the city rather than the coast and for this reason with give thanks to Saffron’s glowing brilliance.
